Dyeing with Natural Ingredients

O

ur fabric starts as natural fibers which are spun into yarn which is then dyed with natural ingredients. Chemical dyes are not only harmful to the environment, but also to the workers who inhale the fumes daily and the person who wears it.

We choose to use only natural dyes that come from fruits, vegetables, trees, and flowers. Some of our dyes even come from leftover food waste like the skins of pomegranates, avocados, and onions.

Using natural dyes makes the Earth a little better and keeps our employees safe. It’s also better for your skin and body as it is nontoxic, nonallergenic, and nonhazardous.

Last but not least, these natural dyes create unique colors and textures in the fabric that can’t be replicated with chemical dyes.

The process starts by drying out the ingredients, then boiling them in water. The yarn/fabric is added until the correct color is formed. Once it's removed from the dye, it is hung up to dry, and then sent to the weavers.

Myrobalan, a local bittersweet gooseberry, is used to make our gray color (pictured left).

Madder, an herbaceous perennial plant, is used to make our pink color (pictured below).
